Bellarmine Chapel, Xavier University

Cincinnati, Ohio

Completed: 1998

Working closely with Fr. Richard Bollman SJ, and MSP Architects, Schickel Design transformed the interior of this iconic mid-century modern structure, building on its inherent strengths, to create a worship space of simplicity, focus, and warmth. The design is flexible and functional, serving both as a parish church and a university chapel. The sanctuary platform reaches forward into the seating, with the pews slightly angled to face it, bringing the assembly into an intimate relationship with the liturgy. Changing artistic representations communicate the stories and ideas in the seasonal church liturgy.
